Family law help for people in Newmarket
When a relationship ends, the questions arrive all at once: where the children will live, how the bills will get paid, whether you can stay in the house. Wren & Ashby is based in central Newmarket, so for many local families we’re only a short drive away.
We help Newmarket residents with separation, divorce, child and spousal support, dividing property, and decision-making responsibility and parenting time (what used to be called custody and access). Most of our work happens outside court, through negotiation, mediation and written agreements. When court is needed, we prepare you for each step.
Your local family court, a few minutes away
If your case does go to court, it will be heard close by. The Superior Court of Justice – Family Court at 50 Eagle Street West handles every kind of family case for York Region, from divorce and support to child protection and adoption.
Early in most court cases, both people attend the Mandatory Information Program (MIP), a two-hour session that explains how family court works and what other options exist. The courthouse also has a Family Law Information Centre, where information and referral coordinators can point you to services, and free mediation for people who are at court that day.
Newmarket also runs a Dispute Resolution Officer program, in which experienced family lawyers lead some early case conferences. Before any court date, we’ll explain who you’re likely to meet and what to bring.
Practical tips for Newmarket residents
Give yourself time on court days. Like most Ontario courthouses, Eagle Street has security screening at the entrance. The court office counter is open weekdays from 9 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.
Keep the children’s routine steady. If you’re working out a schedule, start with what your children already know – their school, their friends, their weekly activities at the Magna Centre or the Ray Twinney Recreation Complex.
Meet in whatever way suits you. We meet at our Newmarket office, by phone or by secure video. Evening appointments are available if you can’t step away from work.
Protect your privacy. In a town where people know each other, it’s natural to worry about who will hear. What you tell us stays confidential, and settling out of court keeps more of your family’s details out of the public file.
Your next step. Book a free 30-minute confidential consultation with Elliot Wren or Marcus Ashby. You’ll leave with a clearer picture of your options and what to do first, with no pressure to decide anything that day. Call (905) 555-0142 or email hello@wrenashby.ca.
