Local family law help
Family Lawyer in Markham
Markham families bring many cultures, languages and traditions to our door, and every story is different. We listen carefully, explain Ontario family law clearly, and help you plan what comes next.

Family law support for Markham families
Ending a relationship can raise questions about family, culture and community as well as the law. Some clients worry about how relatives will react; others want to know how Ontario law treats a marriage that took place overseas. We take the time to understand what matters most to you.
We help people across Markham with separation, divorce, parenting plans, child and spousal support, and dividing property and debts. Our approach is settlement-first: a great many families reach agreement without a trial, and we work to keep conversations respectful, even when emotions run high.
Where Markham family cases are heard
Markham doesn’t have its own family courthouse – the court office on Leslie Street handles small claims. Family cases from Markham go to the Superior Court of Justice – Family Court at 50 Eagle Street West in Newmarket, roughly 25–40 minutes north by car.
Most court cases start with the Mandatory Information Program, which explains the court process and alternatives such as mediation. At the courthouse, a Family Law Information Centre offers free information and referrals, and Legal Aid Ontario duty counsel may be able to give brief advice to people who don’t have a lawyer.
If the other parent or spouse starts a case first, don’t set the papers aside. There are firm deadlines to respond, and we can help you meet them without panic.
Language, culture and practical tips
Use the language you’re most comfortable in. Clear communication matters when decisions affect your children and finances. Let us know when you book if you’d like an interpreter at your meetings.
Bring records from other countries. If you married abroad, or hold property or accounts outside Canada, bring whatever documents you have. These can affect support and property, and it helps to identify them early.
Keep children at the centre. Ontario parenting decisions are based on the child’s best interests, which include the child’s cultural, linguistic, religious and spiritual upbringing and heritage – something many Markham parents care about deeply.
Choose how we meet. Meet us in person at our Newmarket office, or by phone or video from home or work anywhere in Markham.
Decision-making responsibility (the newer term for custody) and parenting time can usually be worked out by agreement. Where they can’t, we’ll guide you through the court steps calmly and clearly.
Take the first step. Book a free 30-minute confidential consultation with Elliot or Marcus. We’ll listen without judgment and help you see your options more clearly. Call (905) 555-0142.
